“Wealth” more commonly known as “The Gospel of Wealth” is an essay written by Andrew Carnegie in June of 1889 that describes the responsibility of philanthropy by the new upper class of self-made rich. The article was published in the North American Review, an opinion magazine for America’s establishment. It was later published as “The Gospel of Wealth” in The Pall Mall Gazette.
Carnegie proposed that the best way of dealing with the new phenomenon of wealth inequality was for the wealthy to utilize their surplus means in a responsible and thoughtful manner (similar to the concept of noblesse oblige). This approach was contrasted with traditional bequest (patrimony), where wealth is handed down to heirs, and other forms of bequest e.g. where wealth is willed to the state for public purposes. Benjamin So skis, a historian of philanthropy, refers to the article as the ‘urtext’ of modern philanthropy.

The Gospel of Wealth by Andrew Carnegie is one of the most influential works in American economic and moral philosophy. Written in 1889, this essay lays out Carnegie’s revolutionary vision that those who accumulate wealth have a moral obligation to distribute it responsibly for the betterment of society.
Carnegie, one of the richest men of the 19th century, rejected the idea of passing on vast fortunes to heirs or hoarding wealth for personal indulgence. Instead, he believed that the rich should act as trustees of their wealth—using it to create opportunities and institutions that benefit the broader public.
In this landmark work, Carnegie discusses:
-
The dangers of wealth inequality
-
The importance of public libraries, schools, and cultural institutions
-
The role of philanthropy in building a just society
-
Why extravagant inheritance can be detrimental to the next generation
More than a historical essay, The Gospel of Wealth offers timeless wisdom for today’s entrepreneurs, investors, and changemakers. In an era of growing income gaps and social inequality, Carnegie’s principles challenge readers to rethink how wealth should be used.
