Genetic and Acquired Syndromes: Foundations of Human Disorders is a structured textbook on human syndromes. It introduces readers to a wide range of genetic and acquired conditions. The book is designed for students of medicine, nursing, genetics, and allied health sciences. Moreover, it explains conditions that influence human development, physiology, and behavior.
The text contains eight detailed chapters. First, it explains syndromic definitions, classifications, and differences between genetic and acquired disorders. Next, readers explore chromosomal syndromes such as Down syndrome and Turner syndrome. The book also covers single-gene disorders like cystic fibrosis and Tay-Sachs disease. In addition, it discusses multifactorial conditions such as autism spectrum disorders and congenital heart defects. These topics highlight the link between genes and environmental influences.
Later chapters focus on acquired syndromes such as AIDS and PTSD. As a result, readers understand how lifestyle, trauma, and infections affect human health. Furthermore, the text examines neurological and developmental disorders through their clinical features and genetic foundations. It also explains their effects on growth, learning, and cognition.
