A tremendous amount is known about educational psychology which is useful to people involved in teaching and learning. Condensing and selecting from this vast body of knowledge has therefore meant that we have had to cover some areas rapidly in order to reach key ideas and conclusions. This means, we hope, that you will not have to wade through a lot of information to reach something interesting. There is a wealth of up-to-date sources and recommended reading for anyone interested in learning more depth. By giving ideas and information about the actual benefits and drawbacks of such advances, a psychological viewpoint may allow us to moderate such trends. Similarly, studies show that separating students into classes based on their abilities has mixed results. Teachers’ high expectations and the unfavourable social groupings that might emerge in such classrooms can also contribute to students in lower socioeconomic groups obtaining a substandard education.
